Tshepiso Mpotle, the renowned Spirit of Praise artist, has been making waves in the music industry for decades. Born and raised in Kroonstad, Mpotle’s musical journey began at a young age, and he attended school in Qwaqwa before leaving in 1987.
Growing up, Mpotle drew inspiration from the legendary Lesotho-based band Sankomota, particularly the iconic Tshepo Tshola. Tshola’s powerful voice and unique style had a profound impact on Mpotle, who cites him as a major influence. In fact, Mpotle’s voice bears a striking resemblance to Tshola’s, a testament to the enduring legacy of Sankomota’s music.
Mpotle’s big break came when he started singing alongside Frank Mooki Leepa, the legendary general of Sankomota. This experience not only honed his craft but also deepened his connection to the music that had inspired him for so long.
Mpotle’s travels took him to Zambia, Namibia, and Botswana, where he performed as a backing vocalist for William Mthethwa. He later joined forces with Spokes H as a lead singer, further honing his craft.
As a solo artist, Mpotle recorded several albums, which he sold on the streets of Rustenburg and Johannesburg’s Bree Street. It was during this time that Aupa Motsiwagae, the former Spirit of Praise organizer, discovered his music and purchased one of his CDs. Just two weeks later, Motsiwagae invited Mpotle to meet with him at the Spirit of Praise office, marking the beginning of a fruitful partnership.
Under the Polygram Record company, which later became Universal Record Label, Mpotle’s music career soared. He was part of the South African government’s delegation to Kadar for a music show and performed in China, Singapore, and other international destinations.
Mpotle’s unique voice caught the attention of Spirit Music, and he soon found himself working alongside Keke Phoofolo. As the second artist to join Spirit Music, Mpotle produced four albums with the label, traveling extensively to Swaziland, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.
When Oupa Motshiwagae submitted Mpotle’s artist profile to Spirit of Praise, led by Aubrey Peacock, Mpotle became an integral part of the team. He was featured on Spirit of Praise volumes one to six, using his music as a platform to preach the word of God to nations.
In a remarkable achievement, Mpotle’s songs “Nqoqele” and “High Praise” have been nominated amongst the top 10 songs in BBC London, a testament to his global appeal and the universality of his music.
Mpotle’s passion is to spread the message of God’s love and power through his music. He attributes his strength and success to the Lord, and his dedication to his craft is evident in his soulful performances.
