The Setsoto Local Municipality recently held a mayoral imbizo, where top-performing matric learners, teachers, and schools were awarded for their outstanding achievements. Hlonolofatso Mokotjo was hailed as the top learner of Setsoto Local Municipality for the year 2024.
In addition to celebrating academic excellence, the municipality also distributed title deeds to deserving beneficiaries, marking a significant milestone in their quest for land ownership.
Mayor Seipati Mbiwe highlighted the need for land for living, acknowledging that the municipality has formalized some space and issued occupancy letters.¹ However, she also cautioned against illegal land occupation, emphasizing the importance of following proper procedures.
The mayor encouraged community participation in programs such as the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) and the Community Works Programme (CWP), which aim to benefit the poorest of the poor. She also stressed the importance of collaboration between the community and refuse collectors to maintain a clean and healthy environment.
Furthermore, the municipality acknowledged the need to improve waste management, particularly at dumping sites. The mayor applauded the efforts of Matwabeng women who occupied one of the dumping sites, but noted that the site requires fencing.
In her address, the mayor also announced plans to renovate and maintain local facilities, creating job opportunities in the process. Additionally, she reported that all roads leading to Setsoto Local Municipality are under construction.
In the previous financial year, 20 tuckshops in the municipality received R10,000 each, while 21 others failed to meet the necessary requirements. The mayor encouraged entrepreneurship and agriculture development in the region.
Overall, the mayoral imbizo demonstrated the municipality’s commitment to recognizing excellence, promoting community development, and addressing pressing challenges.
