As the founder and owner of Polo Park Computer Centre in Meqheleng, Ficksburg, Thabang “Boet Thabi” Robert Kgauta is a shining example of determination, hard work, and community spirit.
Early Life and Career
Born in Sebakong, Gauteng province, Thabang’s educational journey was cut short at Grade 6. However, this did not deter him from pursuing a life of purpose and meaning. During school holidays, he would visit Onia farm in the Free State, where he eventually landed a job, working tirelessly for six years.
Thabang’s next move took him to Meqheleng, where he secured a job as a driver at Pick n Chicken. Although he initially drove without a license, he eventually obtained one, only to be retrenched soon after. This setback proved to be a blessing in disguise, as it prompted Thabang to establish Polo Park Computer Centre in Zone 6.
The Polo Park Journey
Thabang’s entrepreneurial venture was not without its challenges. In the early days, the business struggled to gain traction, with some days yielding only a single copy sale of R0.50. Undeterred, Thabang persevered, exploring various marketing strategies, including advertising on Setsoto FM.
Although the business continued to face difficulties, Thabang’s determination never wavered. He even took on a driving job in Maputsoe, Lesotho, to supplement his income. However, due to health concerns, he was forced to return to Meqheleng, where he refocused his efforts on developing Polo Park Computer Centre.
Community Involvement
Thabang’s commitment to his community is evident in his various roles and endeavors. He has served as:
- Treasurer of Qhowaneng Primary School
- Chairman of Setsoto FM for two terms, during which he:
- Revised the station’s constitution and policies
- Addressed financial mismanagement and recovered stolen funds
- Opened a case against the former station manager for financial mismanagement
- Convener
Thabang’s selfless dedication to his community has earned him a reputation as a respected leader and entrepreneur.
